PRE-EVENT LAUNCHING OF CSM-ACE 2014 AND MEDIA CONFERENCE

In preparation for the upcoming CSM-ACE 2014 or Cyber Security Malaysia - Awards, Conference & Exhibition 2014, a pre-event launching ceremony and a press conference was held at the Royale Chulan Hotel, Kuala Lumpur.

The event was officiated by YAB Dato' Seri DiRaja Dr. Zambry bin Abd. Kadir - Menteri Besar of Perak Darul Ridzuan. Attended the event were YBhg. Dato' Seri Dr. Noorul Ainur Mohd Nur - Secretary General of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI), YABhg. Jeneral Tan Sri Dato' Seri Panglima Mohd Azumi Mohamed (Bersara) - Chairman, Board of Directors, CyberSecurity Malaysia, Dr. Amirudin Abdul Wahab - Chief Executive Officer of CyberSecurity Malaysia, as well as a few dignitaries from the State of Perak.

For the first time CSM-ACE will be held in Ipoh, Perak, from 11 to 15 November 2014. This year's event is co-organised by the Perak State Government and endorsed by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MOSTI) and Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC).

CSM-ACE is an event that involves three main components, namely the Conference, Exhibition and Awards on Cyber Security Malaysia. This year, the composition of CSM-ACE is focusing on cyber security training programmes, in which various training will be offered during this event. In addition, CSM-ACE will also witness a few satellite events such as the WTA Annual Summit 2014, National ICT Security Discourse (NICTSeD) – CyberSAFE Challenge Trophy 2014 and also UTP-HAX 2014.

 
 
INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION: EXPLORING THE FUTURE

CyberSecurity Malaysia was invited to give a keynote speech at the International Conference On Information: Exploring The Future, a jointly organised conference by the Fakulti Pengurusan Maklumat, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Johor and Persatuan Pustakawan Malaysia (PPM).

Lt. Col. Sazali Sukardi (Retired), Vice President of Strategic Research represented CyberSecurity Malaysia and conducted a presentation on "Information Revolution and Evaluating Landscape". In his presentation, Col Sazali stressed on the importance of cyber security, as well as effects of disregarding security issues. He also spoke about the importance of establishing an information management system in order to avoid cyber threats in this era.

CyberSecurity Malaysia's involvement in the seminar was an opportunity to showcase CyberSecurity Malaysia's ability to lead, commitment and to be recognised in this industry, especially with the invitation to Lt. Col. Sazali as a main speaker at the event.

 
 
CYBER SECURITY BRIEFING – HALF YEAR 2014 REVIEW AND ANALYSIS

A briefing session on cyber security scenario in Malaysia was held at the Wisma BERNAMA attended by media representatives from the news agency. The briefing was held to explain and share information on cyber threats and security incidents that occurred in the first six months of 2014.

The presentation was delivered by Dr. Amirudin Abdul Wahab, Chief Executive Officer of CyberSecurity Malaysia, who explained the cyber security incidents statistics reported to Help Cyber999. Dr. Amir also explained the causes of cyber security incidents and shared tips as well as best practices on cyber security.

At the briefing session, Cyber999 Application (Cyber999 App) on a smart phone was launched. Now, Internet users can download Cyber999 App with iOS and Andriod on their smartphones. The objective of the Cyber999 App is to facilitate Internet users to report incidents and cyber security threats.

The media briefing is part of initiative by CyberSecurity Malaysia to strengthen good relationships with BERNAMA.

 
 
1. ASIA PACIFIC COMPUTER EMERGENCY RESPONSE TEAM (APCERT) STEERING COMMITTEE MEETING
2. ASIA PACIFIC NETWORK INFORMATION CENTER 38 (APNIC 38) CONFERENCE

As a founding member of the Asia Pacific Computer Emergency Response Team (APCERT), CyberSecurity Malaysia had participated in the Steering Committee Annual General Meeting of APCERT 2014 which was held in conjunction with the Asia Pacific Network Information Centre 38 (APNIC 38) in Brisbane, Australia.

The efforts and commitment of CyberSecurity Malaysia towards curbing cyber security incidents was recognised during the conference when the proposal to organise the 2015 APCERT Conference alongside the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation – Computer Emergency Response Team (OIC-CERT) was agreed by the international representatives. Among countries involved are Japan, Korea, China, Australia, Macau and Taiwan.

During APNIC 38, CyberSecurity Malaysia presented a paper entitled "Coordinated Malware Eradication Framework" by Dr. Aswami Mohd Ariffin, Vice President Cyber Security Responsive Services during the 'Birds of a Feather' session and "Heartbleed from Malaysia's Perspective" by Megat Muazzam Abdul Mutalib, Head of Malaysia Computer Emergency Response Team (MyCERT) during 'SecurityTrack' session.

The suggestion to work with APNIC to hold cyber safety drills for information security professionals was also highlighted during the conference. As part of the APCERT Liaison portfolio, CyberSecurity Malaysia also presented activity and progress reports as well as the Coordinated Malware Eradication paper headed by CyberSecurity for APCERT during a meeting with the Asia Pacific Top Level Domain (APTLD) and APNIC to work out cooperation possibilities.

 
 
IMPLEMENTING ISO 22301, BUSINESS CONTINUTY MANAGEMENT SYSTEM TRAINING

In line with the implementation of Business Continuity Management System (BCMS), CyberSecurity Malaysia has sought to enhance the skills and knowledge of its staff by participating in training on the implementation of ISO 22301. Through the implementation of ISO 22301, a better quality and effective services can be extended to customers and at the same time increased confidence level of the staff to ensure continuous service can be provided even when business disruption or during crisis.

The training was attended by Zarina Musa and Noor Asyikin Zulkifli from Security Assurance Department.

Among the objectives of the training are:

  1. Preventing unforeseen circumstances in the organisation;
  2. Increasing customer confidence towards the organisation;
  3. Increasing expertise in Business Continuity and ISO 22301;
  4. Developing confidence to implement BCMS; 5. Supporting the implementation of BMS in CyberSecurity Malaysia by familiarising the department with ISO 22301.
 
 
WORKING VISIT TO CENTRE OF EXCELLENCE ACADEMY, GOVERNMENT AND INDUSTRY IN THE UNITED KINGDOM

Conducting research and strengthening global collaboration is one of the cores in National Cyber Security Policy (NCSP). Based on these requirements, CyberSecurity Malaysia made a working visit to several organisations in the United Kingdom (UK) to establish relationship of strategic cooperation in the field of cyber security and at the same time strengthening research capacity, particularly in the field of digital forensics. Amongst the organisations visited are University of Oxford, Imperial College London, Universty of Surrey, Kinesense Limited and CERT-UK.

Among the objectives of the working visit:

  1. Observed the cooperation levels in increasing digital forensics capacity at CyberSecurity Malaysia through research collaboration with universities in the UK;
  2. Introduced CyberSecurity Malaysia and identify joint cooperation opportunities between CyberSecurity Malaysia and CERT-UK;
  3. Invited CERT-UK to become a member of CERT OIC and APCERT and attend yearly conferences for both platforms in 2015.

The outcome of the visit is where CyberSecurity Malaysia will be signing the Letter of Intent to develop cooperation in digital forensics research with Oxford e-Research Centre and Universityof Surrey. There will be more actions adopted for cooperative bonding with Kinesene Limited and Imperial College London. CERT-UK has also agreed to have a joint relationship with Cyber Security Malaysia in the field of cyber security.

 
 
SPRINGER AND IEEE TECHNICALLY CO-SPONSORED SCIENCE AND INFORMATION CONFERENCE 2014

The Springer and IEEE Technically Co-Sponsored Science and Information Conference 2014 was held in London where researchers and industry players presented their findings on research and their experiences in cyber security field, e-learning, intelligent systems and the latest technology trend. In addition to the paper presentations, the conference also includes demonstration of projects, tutorial sessions, industry workshops and keynote addresses and discussions with experts and researchers in related fields.

This conference was organised by The Science and Information Organisation and sponsored by IEEE Springer, Microsoft, dan RK Trans2Cloud. At the conference, Mr. Zahri Yunos, Chief Operating Officer of CyberSecurity Malaysia presented a research paper entitled "Grounding the Component of Cyber Terrorism Framework Using the Grounded Theory". Mr. Zahri also had an interaction session with the academy experts and ICT industry players to exchange views, opinions and experiences on cyber security.

The conference was attended by more than 100 researchers from all over the world. Other Malaysian researchers who attended the conference were MIMOS Berhad, Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Multimedia, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, University of Malaya and the National Arts Culture and Heritage Academy (under the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of Malaysia).

The conference has made possible for CyberSecurity Malaysia to implement the shared research output on the topic of cyber terrorism to the world community. As for the Don'tPhishMe application, the conference was able to help to further develop Don'tPhishMe through better methods.
