The McAfee Security division of Network Associates and GFI, a provider of Windows-based security and messaging software, announced that McAfee's anti-virus technology would be offered as part of the GFI MailSecurity email security package.

GFI MailSecurity from GFI includes the option to integrate McAfee anti-virus technology with its existing exploit detection, email threat detection and content and attachment filtering, equipping businesses with a multi-layered defence against the latest email threats.

"McAfee is arguably the best-known name in anti-virus security, so it was important for us to provide our customers with the option to incorporate the McAfee engine in the anti-virus portion of our new GFI MailSecurity package," said Nick Galea, CEO of GFI. "By combining the McAfee engine with our existing technology, GFI MailSecurity users will have a highly comprehensive shield against new virus assaults," he added.

It seems that GFI selected the McAfee anti-virus scanning engine based on its repeated success in independent evaluations, detection of non-virus attacks such as rogue ActiveX controls and the global anti-virus research talent of McAfee AVERT (Anti-Virus Emergency Response Team).

"Enterprises today need the strongest possible protection against email corruption, and McAfee's anti-virus technology is helping GFI develop a promising approach to attacking the problem," said Todd Gebhart, vice president of partner development for Network Associates' McAfee Security division. He went on to say that, "With our highly regarded virus detection technology integrated into the GFI MailSecurity product, GFI is enabling customers to curb the destructive power of viruses in their email environments."
