SUBANG JAYA: The increasing popularity of e-commerce and concerns about secure transactions have created a need for more training on Internet security solutions.

It was with this in mind that two companies have teamed up with an education institute to offer such courses to companies and individuals.

Locally-incorporated MSC Trustgate.com, which had just been appointed an authorised training centre by global digital trust services provider VeriSign Inc (www.verisign.com), immediately sealed a pact with the Asia Pacific Institute of Information Technology (Apiit) to jointly offer Internet security and e-commerce courses.

MSC Trustgate.com's (www.msctrustgate.com) appointment made it VeriSign's first such centre in the Asia Pacific region, company officials claimed.

Three programmes will initially be offered by the middle of May, varying in length from three to five days and with fees ranging from about RM2,000 to RM4,000, according to Seah Boon Keong, head of research and development at MSC Trustgate.com.

They are Virtual Private Networks (VPN) Essentials, Managing Public Key Infrastructure (PKI) Services, and Strategic E-commerce Architecture and Security.

Seah said that the courses (www.apiit.edu.my/corporatetraining) were targeted at IT professionals such as managers, senior executives and those in decision-making positions.

He claimed that the banking sector had showed a keen interest in the courses, in line with the expected rapid expansion of online banking services in the country.

Multimedia Development Corporation (MDC) senior vice-president Dr Arif Nun, who witnessed a signing ceremony between the three parties last week, noted the need for better security awareness.

He said that the MDC would like to see a strong emphasis on education and training to develop Internet security skills and tackle issues such as confidentiality, integrity and availability of information on the Net.

"Recently there were many reported cases of credit card fraud. We would like to see improved security aspects in Malaysian IT, through the training offered by Apiit and MSC Trustgate.com," he said.

MSC Trustgate.com is a subsidiary of MDC, which manages Malaysia's Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) project.
