Trend Micro Inc., a player in network antivirus and Internet content security solutions announced the deployment of its gateway antivirus and security solutions, to NasionCom Sdn Bhd. This announcement comes after NasionCom's RM15 million appointment of Compaq Computer Corporation (M) Sdn Bhd (now part of the new HP) as system integrator for NasionCom's Broadband Internet Data Centre, in April 2002.

Part of the deal involved a "mail hosting" solution, built specially for its customers to upgrade, or connect themselves to the world, without having to invest a large sum of money or resources. To combat security threats from coming through to the broadband network infrastructure of this service, NasionCom chose to go with Trend Micro.

"For businesses like ours, defence and security are critical on the field, and even more important on the Internet," said Liz Kung, chief technology officer, NasionCom. "The integrated applications under the agreement, with its best-in-class partners provide our customers with the strictest levels of prevention, detection and response to security threats," added Liz Kung.

NasionCom's data centre will utilise Trend Micro's Internet gateway solutions, InterScan Messaging Security Suite, or IMSS, to ensure the automatic deployment of virus alerts at NasionCom's Internet gateway to protect its messaging system from the latest viruses and malicious codes.

"Furthermore, we are impressed with IMSS' outbreak prevention policy (OPP), which enables us to provide real-time virus alerts and automated infection prevention, as well as AV services, all which are highly scalable, reliable and offer the performance and security that our customers require," said Liz Kung.

Wong Joon Hoong, country sales manager for Trend Micro Inc., said that, "We are pleased to be working with NasionCom and Compaq Computer Corporation (M) Sdn on this project, and we are confident that our mutual customers will benefit from this alliance."

Apart from scanning subscribers' e-mails before reaching their respective mailboxes, IMSS also enables NasionCom to offer junk, spam mail, hoaxes, and mail content filtering services for its e-mail hosting subscribers.

"The IMSS security solution will help NasionCom's customers detect harmful intrusions, prevent unauthorised access to data and to capture hackers or uninvited users before critical business communications are impacted," Wong explained. "These elements will enhance existing security solutions across NasionCom's Internet data centre, to ultimately provide secured and value-added broadband services."

The deployment of Trend Micro's IMSS will be centrally managed and automatically distributed via Trend Virus Control System, or TVCS, Trend Micro's solutions control manager, and is backed up by Trend Micro's eDoctor 24x7 virus support.

According to Wong, the adoption of its best-of-breed technology is beneficial to NasionCom's e-mail hosting customers, as he claims that IMSS is the only antivirus solution in the market currently, which provides proactive outbreak prevention policy (OPP) to detect viruses during outbreaks before virus signatures can be available.

"Most of today's hosting mail servers do not have proper or complete virus scanning facilities," said Wong. "As virus attacks and security threats become increasingly sophisticated, customers require security solutions that can interact with one another to ensure that these attacks can be repelled as quickly as possible."
