NISER Calls For Public And Private Sectors' Cooperation In IT Security
23rd July 2004 (Bernama)

KUALA LUMPUR, July 23 (Bernama) -- National ICT Security and Emergency Response Centre (NISER) director, Lt Col Husin Jazri Friday said that the incident response team from the public and private sectors should cooperate in the area of information technology (IT) securities.

"The collaboration within all the sectors will allow discussion and sharing of experience in solving the problem," Husin told a press conference after MyCERT Special Interest Group's First Knowledge Sharing session here.

NISER was formed by the National Information and Communication Technology Council (NiTC) to address all the information technology communication (ICT) security issues.

The Malaysian Computer Emergency Response Team (MyCERT) is an operation unit of NISER.

MyCERT provides incident response services to Malaysian internet users. It also aims to reduce direct cost of security to organisations and lower the risk of consequential damages.

MyCERT, in its second quarter summary report ended June 30, 2004 announced that the number of incidents related to interruption of internet usage rose by 56.5 percent to 4,095.

Such incidents include intrusion, disruption, virus, hack threat, mail bomb and spam to name a few.

"In the second quarterly report, the spam incidents had contributed the most of the incidents, with a total of 3,928 cases," he added.

In effort to reduce the number of spam incidents among internet users, Husin said NISER would hold a forum next week to find ways to prevent and minimise such occurrences.
