No sign of Windows worm in Malaysia

PETALING JAYA: No Malaysian company has fallen victim to the Zotob worm or its variants, which crippled several US media companies on Tuesday.

The National ICT Security and Response Centre (Niser) and the Malaysian Computer Emergency Response Team (MyCERT) said they had not received any reports of the worm affecting local businesses.

Niser director Lt Kol Husin Jazri said the worm affected the US media companies because they had not installed a Microsoft security patch.

This would have prevented it from exploiting certain vulnerabilities in Windows 2000's plug-and-play feature, he said.

MyCERT is a unit of Niser and is responsible for the tracking and logging of computer security incidents as well as analysing major security incidents and trends.

Microsoft Malaysia platform security manager Jason Yuen, said the worm - which is spreading quickly in the US - only targets computers using the Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system.

Microsoft's security patch is available at www.microsoft.com/technet/security/bulletin/MS05-039.mspx.
