Hackers set for Dubai conference
27 March 2008 (The Star)

*KUALA LUMPUR* Imagine a scenario where the oil and gas pipes in the Persian Gulf are sent offline for a day, week, month, or even an hour - the work of cyberterrorists. Think about the losses and the pandemonium that would result globally.

Could this happen? Are there precautions that can be taken to prevent such an incident from happening? That's what experts and other participants of the coming HITBSecConf–Dubai network security conference aim to find out.

The conference, scheduled for April 16-17 at the Sheraton Hotel in Dubai, will feature two global figures from the security industry, who will share their views on such scenarios.

Raoul Chiesa was a key member of the European and North American hacker scene in the mid-90s and is founder of Blackhats.it, a computer security website.

He will be joined by fellow Italian security evangelist Alessio Pennasilico, a member of several security focused organisations, including AIPSI, AIP, OpenBeer and Hacker's Profiling Project.

Also expected to attend are speakers and representatives from leading security and telecommunications companies such as IBM, Oger Systems, Scanit Middle East, Google, Microsoft, Motorola, BlueInfy, ArgenISS, and Telspace Systems.

"The losses, both economically and in terms of human casualties, of any cyberattack would be enormous governments and public institutions need to be aware, they need to be ready, and they need to be prepared for the worst case scenario for the welfare of their citizens," said Chiesa.
