Malaysian cyber security better than most: CEO
14 April 2009 (Daily Express)

Kota Kinabalu: Management of cyber security in Malaysia is considered above average based on the response time to complaints on cyber threats in the country.

CyberSecurity Malaysia Chief Executive Officer, Lt Col (rtd) Husin Haji Jazri said he was not saying that Malaysia was hacker-free "but the way cyber security is managed in Malaysia is beyond average and in some cases better than in some developed countries".

He said if there was a comparison on the level of cyber security, Malaysia would be rated quite high in terms of ensuring and creating a safe cyberspace environment.

"This is not to say we are free from malicious activities, but they are within the control of the (responsible) agencies in Malaysia."

Speaking at a media presentation at Le Meridien, Monday, he cited a phishing case or identity theft that was reported by a bank in Malaysia.

"We managed to put down the (fraud) website in less than one hour É it shows that the responsiveness of the Government is commendable," he said.

"This is very fast ... in some countries, it would take them three to four days."

According to him, CyberSecurity Malaysia is the national specialist centre on cyber security under the purview of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti).

"We are a non-profit organisation providing service to the Government.

We have about 150 staff and about 80 per cent are specialists," he said.

CyberSecurity Malaysia was launched by former Prime Minister Tun Abdullah Ahmad Badawi in August 2007.

It was better known for its digital forensics services after being featured on primetime TV news when its digital forensics analysts appeared as expert witnesses for high profile court cases last year.

CyberSecurity Malaysia is conducting cyber-training on Google-Fu Power Search Techniques by invitation from the Guidance and Counseling Unit of SK Tanjung Aru 1 in collaboration with the City District Education Office today (Apr. 14).

According to him, about 40 teachers and education officers from various schools around the city would be participating in the training, the first time in the country.

The training basically showed how to become a power user of the Internet search engine in getting and analysing information.

Other than training and forensic services, the organisation also provides other services such as Outreach, Security Assurance, Product Evaluation using Common Criteria Standard, Information Security Management System guidelines and Cyber 999.

Cyber 999, a patented trademark of CyberSecurity Malaysia, is a reference centre where the public can get consultation on any security issues such as cyber harassment, email bomb, hack threat, malicious software by email to cyber999@cybersecurity.my.

Other training services include certification programmes for cyber security practitioners like the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP), Systems Security Certified Practitioner (SSCP), certifications from SANS Institute, certifications from ISO Quality Testing and certifications from Business Continuity Institute.
