KUALA LUMPUR: The CyberSecurity Malaysia team is the regional winner in the Global CyberLympics Asia Pacific Championship - the first international team ethical-hacking competition ever organised in the country.

The event was part of the Hacker Halted Asia-Pacific Conference here on Nov 15. The conference is an annual event.

Organised by The International Council of e-Commerce Consultants (EC-Council), the competition comprised a series of ethical-hacking games featuring both offensive and defensive security challenges.

EC-Council is a global member-based organisation that certifies individuals in cybersecurity and e-commerce incorporated in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

In the regional leg, the four-member CyberSecurity team beat seven other teams from other countries in the Asia-Pacific region, including Thailand, Vietnam and South Korea, to clinch the top spot.

According to CyberSecurity Malaysia chief executive officer Lt Col (ret) Datuk Prof Husin Jazri, the team has made the country proud and proven that we have capable people in terms of cybersecurity technical knowledge and expertise.

The team took home prizes worth more than US$30,000 (RM90,000) that include medals, EC-Council Certification Training Scholarship and certification exam vouchers, TakeDownCon USA 2012 conference passes, and IT security related e-books.

The icing on the cake is that the team will represent Asia Pacific at the World Finals, tentatively scheduled to be held in the United States in the first quarter of next year.

In that competition, the prizes are worth up to US$80,000 (RM240,000) and the CyberSecurity Malaysia team will have to compete against five other regional winners.

The mission of Global CyberLympics is to unify global cyberdefence players; discover new talents, methods and ideas; create awareness and educate the global community on issues of information security; as well as foster friendships and boost cohesiveness among information security professionals.
