PETALING JAYA: CyberSecurity Malaysia, the national cybersecurity specialist agency, has been reelected to the Asia Pacific Computer Emergency Response Team (APCERT) steering committee at the 10th APCERT Conference in Brisbane, Australia.

Cybersecurity Malaysia will hold the post until 2015.

APCERT, which was established in 2003, is a collaboration of 30 Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT) from 20 economies within the Asia Pacific Region.

CyberSecurity Malaysia is also the chair and secretariat at the OIC-CERT, a collaboration of CERT teams among the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation member countries.

The agency says it hopes to link the two international cybersecurity collaborative platforms together to exchange knowledge and expertise.

In his keynote address at the APCERT conference, CyberSecurity Malaysia chairman General (Rtd) Tan Sri Mohd Azumi Mohamed pointed out that cybersecurity was being threatened with newer malware and threats.

"We cannot stand idle and wait for cyberattacks. We must continue to formulate initiatives and build collective capabilities to fight these emerging threats by sharing information and working together to safeguard our cyberspace, our privacy, our ideas, and our innovation," he said.

Mohd Azumi is also the chairman of OIC-CERT.
