National Malaysian agency CyberSecurity Malaysia, which has been re-elected to the steering committee of the Asia Pacific Computer Emergency Response Team (APCERT), said this year's regional AGM theme - 'Then, Now and Beyond' - underpins the urgency of managing new cyber security threats.

During APCERT's annual general meeting, hosted by CERT Australia recently in Brisbane, CyberSecurity Malaysia chairman and chair of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation - Computer Emergency Response Team (OIC-CERT), General (Rtd) Tan Sri Dato' Seri Panglima Mohd Azumi Mohamed, said: "This year's event theme, 'Then, Now and Beyond' is appropriate indeed with the emergence of new threats in cyber security."

"We cannot stand idle and wait for cyber attacks," said Mohd Azumi. "We must continue to formulate initiatives and build collective capabilities to fight these emerging threats by sharing information and working together to safeguard our cyber space, our privacy, our ideas, and our innovation."

He also said that to create a safe, clean and reliable cyber space, APCERT would need to continue to examine and plan for the mitigation of various threats.

"The members of this collaboration must constantly engage their various governments to formulate national cyber security strategies and effective legal frameworks while nurturing cross border collaboration," he added. "In completing their cyber security initiatives, members must develop a holistic approach in capacity building and heavily engage in the public-private sector cooperation."

APCERT is a collaboration of 30 Computer Emergency Response Teams (CERT) from 20 economies within the Asia Pacific Region since 2003.
