CyberSecurity: Be wary of 'cyber flirts'
Borneo Post (January 8, 2014, Wednesday)

KUALA LUMPUR: CyberSecurity Malaysia, the national cyber security specialist agency under the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, has alerted the public to be wary of 'cyber flirts'.

In a statement here yesterday, chief executive officer of CyberSecurity Malaysia, Dr Amirudin Abdul Wahab, said there has been a rising trend in cyber blackmail scam via social network sites.

He said four incidents of cyber blackmail scam were reported to Cyber999 Help Centre in 2012.

"By mid-2013, the help centre saw an upward trend in the cyber blackmail scam. By end-2013 the number rose to 73, which is 18.5 times more. This huge increase in incidents has triggered the alarm," he said.

Amirudin said the increase has made the agency very worried.

"We have referred the issue to the Royal Malaysia Police for further investigation so that the culprits can be dealt with accordingly.

"We believe there are more incidents out there that are not reported to us," he said.

He said Malaysians must be extra careful and not to entertain online seductions from women they got to know only in social media, but had never really known   in person. Amirudin said the victims were mainly teenage boys to middle aged man.

"The perpetrators are suspected to be foreign nationals, most probably males with some female accomplices creating a scam hub in various locations including in Malaysia," he said. - Bernama
