International Conference on Cryptology & Malicious Security (Mycrypt 2016), Kuala Lumpur
1 – 2 December 2016

On 1 and 2 December 2016, International Conference on Cryptology and Security Malicious or Mycrypt 2016 took place in Kuala Lumpur.

This conference was organized by the Multimedia University (MMU) in collaboration with CyberSecurity Malaysia and MIMOS supported by world leading security organization specialist such as IBM Research, the Naval Research Laboratory, Nippon Telegraph and Telephone (NTI), Snapchat, and institutions of higher learning, especially the University College London (UCL), Royal Holloway University of London (Rhul), Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne (EPFL), New York University, University of California Davis and the University of Washington.

It focuses on the cryptography research paradigm shift to think outside the box and create awareness as well as information sharing channels to discuss current issues involving cryptography. This conference is also a platform for the cryptography community to discuss strategic direction as well as the challenges faced in addition to enhancing cooperation between the cryptographic community.

A total of 57 participants consisting of cryptography practitioners from both local and international attended the two-day conference. Mycrypt 2016 raised awareness of cyber security industry in Malaysia, in addition to promoting community service CyberSecurity Malaysia to international cryptography.

Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation - Computer Emergency Response Team (OIC-CERT) 2016, Jeddah, Saudi Arabia
11 - 14 December 2016

On 11 to 14 December 2016, Annual General Meeting and Conference of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation - Computer Emergency Response Team (OIC-CERT) took place in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The event which was jointly organized by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) and CyberSecurity Malaysia held to provide a channel of information sharing and discussion of current issues of cyber security, hold technical sessions and exchange of experiences so that administration of cyber security becomes more efficient and effective, provide a platform for the country nationalized members to discuss the strategic direction and challenges and to increase cooperation in the field of cyber security among member states.

The conference themed "Towards Resilient Cyber Ummah" was inaugurated by His Excellency Dr. Yusuf Bin Ahmed Al-Othmaineen, Secretary General of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and attended by 64 participants from 22 countries.

As the Permanent Secretariat of the OIC-CERT, CyberSecurity Malaysia is committed to the growth and development of this organization. It also strengthens cooperation between Malaysia and other countries at the international level and enhances Malaysia's capabilities in dealing with cyber threats through the sharing of information, expertise, research and best practices among countries members of OIC-CERT.

In addition, the involvement of CyberSecurity Malaysia also shows the significant contribution and role played by Malaysia in the field of cyber security to the member countries of the OIC and Asia Pacific.

Android Common Vulnerabilities & Exposures (CVE) and Application Testing Bootcamp, Melbourne, Australia
11 – 17 December 2016

CyberSecurity Malaysia participated in the Android Common Vulnerabilities & Exposures (CVE) and Application Testing Bootcamp in Melbourne, Australia from 11 to 17 December 2016.

The workshop organized by BAE Systems is an exercise to expose participants towards the testing of Android system in terms of weaknesses and issues that enable Android equipment to be manipulated for specific purposes.

CyberSecurity Malaysia's delegation were Dr. Aswami Fadillah Mohd Ariffin, Senior Vice President, Cyber Security Responsive Services Division, Megat Muazzam Abdul Muttalib, Head of Malaysia Computer Emergency Response Team (MyCERT), Mohamed Fadzlee Sulaiman from the Department of Digital Forensics and Muhammad Zuhair Abd Rahman of the Department MyCERT.

CyberSecurity Malaysia's participation in this workshop have increased knowledge of the methodology adopted in the test and find vulnerabilities (bugs) to a system of Android applications. In addition, it also strengthened cooperation with the tester applications from BAE Systems as well as share information on recent weakness of Android applications available in the market.

The program has also strengthened the capacity of CyberSecurity Malaysia towards becoming a National Reference Center in matters related to cyber security.

Briefing Session to Announce and Present the Submission and Evaluation Criteria on Trusted Cryptographic Algorithm List State (MySEAL), Putrajaya
22 December 2016

On 22 December 2016 a briefing session to Announce and Present the Submission and Evaluation Criteria on Trusted Cryptographic Algorithm List State (MySEAL) took place.

The briefing organized by the Department of Cryptography, CyberSecurity Malaysia was attended by 83 participants from the government agencies, industry, the Malaysian Society of Cryptology Research (MSCR) and higher learning institutions both public and private.

It aimed at presenting and announcing the Submission and Evaluation Criteria Criteria MySEAL Version 1.0 [2016] to cryptography and information security experts from public and private agencies, as well as academicians in Malaysia.

In addition, it is also a platform to announce the date of submission for new cryptographic algorithms on 22 December 2016 until 17 November 2017. The cryptographic algorithm will be evaluated and tested in order to assess the level of safety and suitability for listing in MySEAL.

Official Visit by YBhg. Dato' Sri Khairil bin Awang, Deputy Director General of Education Malaysia (Policy and Education Development), Ministry of Education Malaysia to CyberSecurity Malaysia, Sri Kembangan
27 December 2016

On 27 December 2016, CyberSecurity Malaysia welcomed a visit from the Honorable Dato' Sri Khairil bin Awang, Deputy Director General of Education (Policy and Education Development), Ministry of Education Malaysia. The visit was also attended by senior officials of the Ministry of Education of the various sectors.

The delegation was welcomed by Dr. Zahri Yunus, Chief Operating Officer. Briefing on the functions and role of CyberSecurity Malaysia was presented by Lt. Col. Mustaffa Ahmad (Retired), Senior Vice President, Outreach and Capacity Building Division and also visited Digital Forensics Laboratory and operation of Computer Emergency Response Team Malaysia (MyCERT).

During the visit, Cyber Security Awareness Benchmark study was presented to primary and secondary schools students of and parents. The findings of this study will be used in the development of national cyber security awareness modules to be implemented in primary and secondary schools throughout the country.

The visit was to strengthen collaboration between CyberSecurity Malaysia by the Ministry of Education in matters relating to cyber security.
