Behavioural Competency Assessment (BCA)

The Behavioural Competency Assessment (BCA), developed by CyberSecurity Malaysia in collaboration with renowned psychometricians, evaluates essential non-technical skills for effective performance in information security roles. It assesses how individuals perceive their responses to workplace situations, offering insights into various aspects of their character, including thinking style, decision-making, teamwork, and willingness to learn.

BCA Framework

BCA assesses FIVE key factors that drive high performance in information security roles.

Why BCA?

  • Initial and Continuous Assessment: BCA is used not only for initial competency assessments but also for ongoing improvement, helping individuals to identify and address skill gaps in information security.
  • Comprehensive Evaluation: In information security, practitioners are responsible for ensuring the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of information. To excel, they must demonstrate key behavioural traits such as ethical standards, compliance, reliability, and adaptability.
  • Insightful Analysis: Identifying and measuring these traits provide valuable insights into individuals’ current capabilities and potential for career development.

The insights gained from BCA help identify an individuals’ strengths, areas for improvement, and compatibility with team roles. By integrating BCA results into training and development programs, organizations empower their teams to build resilient information security capabilities for managing and mitigating risks effectively.

BCA is most effective when used alongside other assessments to achieve a comprehensive evaluation of a person’s strengths and potential. This holistic approach ensures a thorough understanding of both non-technical and technical skills essential for success in information security roles.

Objective

The Behavioral Competency Assessment (BCA) is designed to:

  • Provide a scientific method for measuring competencies essential for excellence in information security roles.
  • Deliver structured, consistent, and systematic performance feedback reporting.
  • Ensure factual assessments, replacing subjective 'gut-feel' approaches in selecting and assigning information security responsibilities.

Key Benefits

  • Build High-Performing Teams: Establish clear standards for skills, behaviour, and knowledge in information security roles.
  • Structured Talent Management: Create a consistent process for recruitment, promotions, performance management, and succession planning.
  • Empower Individual Growth: Enable information security practitioners to understand their strengths and work on areas for improvement, driving career success.
