26th February 2004 (Bernama)

SERI KEMBANGAN, Feb. 26, 2004 -- The National ICT Security and Emergency Response Centre (NISER - www.niser.org.my), has today embarked upon computer security workshop entitled "Incident Response and Computer Forensics Workshop", which was held in conjunction with APRICOT 2004 Security Track - APCERT Security Conference 2004.

Organized by NISER and sponsored by Microsoft, this workshop managed to gather participants from local and overseas attending the conference. APRICOT (www.apricot2004.net) is an annual event and this year it is hosted in Malaysia.

Director of NISER, Lt. Colonel Husin Jazri said, "The main objective of this workshop is to provide awareness of incident response and computer forensics. By having some knowledge on incident response and computer forensics, it is anticipated that the organizations will be able to handle and resolve incidents and information recovery at first level while awaiting assistance from the relevant authority or CERT".

"We are satisfied with the workshop as it managed to get participation from local and overseas. This reflects the growing of ICT security awareness by both international and local participants", he added.

NISER has two operation units, namely MyCERT (Malaysian CERT) and Computer Forensics to handle incident response and computer forensics, respectively.

MyCERT, which has been in operation since 1997, provides incident response services to Malaysian Internet users with the objective to help reducing the probability of successful network attacks, reduce direct costs of security to organizations and lower the risk of consequential damages.

Computer forensics focuses on the aftermath of computer security incidents. The goals are to conduct a structured investigation to determine exactly what happened, who was responsible, and to perform the investigation in such a way that the results are useful in criminal proceeding.

"NISER specializes and provides expert opinion on subject matters and continuously identifies possible gaps that could be detrimental to National Security", Husin added.
