TO RAISE awareness of information security and online safety among the country's Internet users, agencies responsible for cyber security began a three-day campaign at the Times Square Shopping Complex yesterday.

The Cyber Security Awareness Week was officially launched by the Minister of Communications, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Hamzah Pahlawan Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdullah Begawan Mudim Dato Paduka Hj Bakar, with the theme of "Be Aware, Secure and Vigilant".

Yesterday, the exhibitions and scheduled talks opened to the public, leaftlets and booklets on online security tips were also distributed to school leaders by the minister in a small ceremony, and continue to be available to the public throughout the campaign.

The event was organised by the Authority for Info-communications Technology Industry (AITI), in collaboration with E-Government National Centre (EGNC) and IT Protective Security Services (ITPSS) as the national Computer Emergency Response Team (BRUCERT).

The event, according to AITI, was held in conjunction with APEC Telecommunication Cyber Security Awareness Day, which is celebrated annually every October 29.

One of the main objectives of the event was to highlight the importance of information security among Internet users in the country.

Yesterday, a security expert from Malaysia, Ahmad Ismadi Yazid Sukaimi, a 15-year-expert in the field, gave several talks on cyber security.

In his talks, he stressed that cybercrime has risen alongside the increase amount of users and also talked in depth of several case studies.

In the afternoon, he also talked on "Securing Your Online Identity" as well as the "Fundamentals of Mobile Services".

Today, the Royal Brunei Police Force will be giving a talk at 10am about "Sexual Predator and Online Grooming", while EGNC will talk on "IT Security Incidents" at 2.30pm.The Brunei Times
